A Beginner's Samhain Ritual: 5 Simple Steps

Samhain, celebrated from October 31 into November 1, is a seasonal festival many practitioners use to honor the turning of the year, remember loved ones, and reflect on what they are ready to release. You do not need a large collection of tools to mark it. Here is a simple ritual you can do at home in about twenty minutes.

1. Clear your space

Tidy a small surface, such as a shelf, a windowsill or a table, so it can serve as your altar. Open a window for a moment and let fresh air in. Many people also use incense or a ritual spray to mark the start of the practice.

2. Gather a few meaningful items

Choose a candle, a crystal that speaks to you, and something that represents someone you want to remember, like a photo or a keepsake. If you would like everything in one place, our 54-Piece Ritual Starter Kit includes crystals, dried herbs, candles, parchment and a notebook.

3. Set an intention

Write down one thing you are ready to let go of this season, and one thing you want to welcome in. Keep it short and honest. A journal or a sheet of parchment works well.

4. Light the candle and take a quiet moment

Light your candle on a heat-resistant holder and sit with your intentions for a few minutes. Read what you wrote, say a name aloud if you are remembering someone, or simply breathe. Never leave a flame unattended.

5. Close the ritual

Thank the space, extinguish the candle safely, and keep your notes somewhere you can return to. Some people bury or safely burn their written release at the end. Others save it until the winter solstice.
